The Face of Adversity
I have some wonderful verses I would like you to start to ponder on regularly every time you feel like you’re being over whelmed with the issues. There is a lot in Proverbs and the Psalms but I will send those to you later. These three passages I think you’ll find strength in.
I have loved this passage for such a long time. God will not grow tired as we do. He doesn’t get weary. We can’t begin to understand the “Why’s” in our lives but regardless of what is at the heart of those questions, God has answers that He shares with us in an abiding peace. He give us strength as we become weary. At the points where we just know we can’t go further God’s there to help us by. The devil doesn’t want you to tap into this resource. He would rather use situations like Claire’s illness to pull us away from our Father.
Isaiah 40:28-31 (NIV)
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
While the devil will use situations like illness, death, and disasters to separate us from the Lord, He is always there. His love never leaves us.
Jude 1:20-21 (NIRV)
Dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith. Let the Holy Spirit guide and help you when you pray. The mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ will bring you eternal life. As you wait for his mercy, remain in God’s love.
As I mentioned to you last night you need to insulate yourself right now. This passage in Jude is an example of it. Build yourself up. Make yourself stronger by reading, and meditating on the Word of God. Pray not just for Claire, but include yourself. Doing this you can be read for any onslaught that is thrown at you.
Ephesians 6:11-18 (NIRV)
Put on all of God’s armor. Then you can stand firm against the devil’s evil plans. Our fight is not against human beings. It is against the rulers, the authorities and the powers of this dark world. It is against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly world. So put on all of God’s armor. Evil days will come. But you will be able to stand up to anything. And after you have done everything you can, you will still be standing. So stand firm. Put the belt of truth around your waist. Put the armor of godliness on your chest. Wear on your feet what will prepare you to tell the good news of peace. Also, pick up the shield of faith. With it you can put out all of the flaming arrows of the evil one. Put on the helmet of salvation. And take the sword of the Holy Spirit. The sword is God’s word. At all times, pray by the power of the Spirit. Pray all kinds of prayers. Be watchful, so that you can pray. Always keep on praying for all of God’s people.
This passage gets skipped over by a lot of people, but it is key when dealing with adversarial forces. We know the tools the devil will try to use against us. These are the tools God places in our grasp. Read these regularly and ask yourself if there is more you can do to take advantage of what God provides to protect ourselves.
