Recovery – September 16th, 2018

Recovery…

Yesterday I was preparing breakfast when our cat Mic managed to get tangled up between my feet. I completely lost all footing as my body which was headed across the room continued and my feet remained embroiled in battle with the cat.

Now for recovery… Let’s talk!

Tremendous pain! After my shoulder and head bounced off the stove, my torso impacted the floor with the force of a 80 lb. sack of potatoes dropped from the back of a pickup to the pavement below.

Mic was gone. He wanted nothing to do with me or my feet any more. I laid there with the side of my head resting against the kitchen stove making a mental assessment of my condition. Despite having all kinds of pain going on from my hips to my head I couldn’t identify any given part that was screaming out “I’m BROKEN!

I was a bit puzzled because there seemed to be a short period of time in my mental recording of the event that was missing. Was it input overload? Did the bump on the head knock me out for a second or two? I twisted my neck around as best I could wedged against the kitchen cabinets and the stove door.

1 Thessalonians 5: 17 came to mind.

Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

So I thanked the Lord for guiding me to the ground in such a way as not to have broken anything severely. He surely had softened my impact as I recall years ago falling running up our split level stairs which landed me on my . side at the top of the stairs.

That adventure had produced several sprained ribs. I hadn’t ever heard of such a thing but the doctor told me in the ER that sprained ribs were worse than actually braking them. I didn’t want to test that theory and the ribs were plenty painful even after they wrapped them.

This time, there were no bones protruding from my skin anywhere that I could see and I wasn’t bleeding except for some minor skin scrapes, I was grateful.

The fact was that, my tumble had concluded a whole lot better than it could have given my proximity to the steel frame of the stove and hardwood that comprised the kitchen cabinets. Mic who was now checking himself out was fairly unscathed, and through humbling, I was just banged up a bit.

I got up and hobbled my way across the kitchen and finished up what I was preparing. At least 60-70% of my body was in constant protest over the indigence that had been inflicted on it. Taking my breakfast sandwich and coffee to the living room I plopped in my recliner and began to eat my breakfast while still taking assessment of my condition post-fall.

Over the hours that passed up till about noon time, the pain subsided with the exception of ‘muscle memory’ protesting what had been done to it. I needed some things from the store and a bite to eat, so out the door I went hobbling less now, and things popping all over as I made my way to the car.

It wasn’t till yesterday afternoon late that my body came to full realization what had taken place. Pain kept increasing in my back, hips and neck. I couldn’t find any way to get comfortable. By bed time, I was back to my slow hobble, with protests from all over my body to every movement I forced it to do.

Recovery

It’s not real pleasant to find yourself injured and needing to recover from damage we have done to ourselves. Appreciation of where we were prior to the injury is profound. Desire to come to resolution becomes a matter of priority, and if we have any cognitive reasoning, we will seek to not repeat this injury again.

Pay careful attention, then, to how you live — not as unwise people but as wise — making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Thankfully, the Lord had given me a metaphor to learn by. Rather than having me go through an actual spiritual fall and corresponding recovery, this object lesson could serve to help me avoid some of those potential falls in the future.

I was focused on making my breakfast and not on where my feet were and what they were encountering roughly 5 feet below my otherwise engaged brain. The cat and my feet altered my agenda without me making a conscious decision to change.

If we don’t pay attention to all that is in our path, we are liable to find ourself sprawled out wondering what happened when something came across our footsteps and down we went.

Of course, the most common thing that can trip us up is going to be sin, and nine times out of ten that sin is going to be based in serving our selves rather than anything else.

I’m convinced that our ego and pride exist somewhere around our ankles, because it is so often self worship that trip us up and beckons us to sin.

Seriously, do a quick assessment for yourself. Write down the last three sins that you’re aware of in your life that you’ve committed. If you can’t think of any then perhaps you don’t understand enough about what sin is to us. We all have sin in our lives, identifying it and dealing with it is the critical process we must always be prepared to deal with.

Once you have your survey prepared of your five most recent sins. Perform a simple assessment of each of them to determine what was the motivating factor for each. I’m fairly certain that at lease four of the five turn out to be self motivated.

I ate too much – Self-gratification – gluttony.
I was speeding on the  highway – Self importance – My time  is more valuable than others safety on the road.
I saw that guy/gal and oh my – Another self-gratification in lust.
I was angry with someone – Self importance – They crossed MY boundary and infringed on my space.
Unkind thoughts – Who me?

We could if we thought about it make a list a mile long in the course of a day. and the bulk of these would be self serving. Placing us before others. Placing us before the priorities that we know we should be attending to. Placing us before Jesus.

How to Recover Spiritually

In the case of my accident yesterday, recovery is something that will take a few days more than likely, I just need to take it easy and allow my body to heal from the internal bruising that it took yesterday morning. In the mean time I need not repeat the same things that caused my fall. I need to be extra careful of my footsteps, and allow my physical body to heal without inflicting further injury or irritation.

For our spiritual recovery it’s somewhat similar.

Repentance

I need to not go the way I have been going, avoiding that which caused me to fall spiritually. Repentance is to turn away from something while turning to Jesus. We most often find ourselves tangled up in sin when we take our eyes off of Jesus and focus on things of this world and serving self.

Therefore repent and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped out, that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send Jesus, who has been appointed for you as the Messiah.

Recompense

Seeking the forgiveness of those we have injured in our sin.

There is always collateral damage when we sin. In every case Jesus is injured so we have to seek His forgiveness.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 1:9-10 (CSB)

But this isn’t always just between us and God. If our sin has impacted someone else then it is incumbent on us to seek their forgiveness as well. Understanding, that our forgiveness isn’t incumbent on them forgiving us. We have to seek forgiveness and give forgiveness without the typical human reservations that we tend to adopt. ‘They hurt me!‘, is not a reason not to forgive.

So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.

You simply can’t render your service to God if you are aware of transgressions with another and you refused to address the matter.

“For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses.”

Matthew 6:14-15 (CSB)

Our forgiveness of our transgressions, places a massive burden on us to forgive others in return. Perhaps one of the hardest challenges we have is to forgive as Christ forgives us.  We never can actually perform to that standard, but we must put our efforts to plant our feet where Jesus calls us to, and He wants us to forgive as He forgives us.

Remediation

After turning away from our sin, seeking forgiveness and setting ourselves back where we need to be. There needs to be a conscious action to see that this doesn’t come back into our path again and we find ourselves lying prone in the same spot again.

This is where God’s Word comes into play.

I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you. Lord, may you be blessed; teach me your statutes.

Psalms 119:11-12 (CSB)

Study the Word, allowing our spirit to heal from the damage we have inflicted on it.

Not just absorbing it, but being obedient to it.

But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

James 1:22 (CSB)

Application of God’s Word is every bit as important as the absorption of it.

So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it.

Don’t continue to sin.

Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

“No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
