6,000 Years Old

6,000 Years Old

It’s not as old as you think…

May 13th, 2019

If you type in an online search (I used Bing), “How old is earth?” It comes back 4.54 billion years old. The truth is that this number isn’t authoritative at all. The ‘science’ behind it is merely theoretical and is based on some very dubious assumptions. That’s right, assumptions.  How is it then we simply accept this unproven speculation as fact?

The first thing you might guess is that this is accepted fact because there is nothing to challenge the assumption and in the absence of a compelling competing theory the only established theory is accepted as being factual.

However, the thing is, there is a compelling competing explanation of earth’s age.

If you turn around and do another search on Bing, seeking the age of the universe, it will return 13.772 billion years. Roughly three times as old as earth.

The ironic thing about this competing set of events, is that from a historical perspective the evidence for the competitor by far outweighs the theoretical Old Earth concept. Evidence if tested by any reasonable historian without a bias, would conclude that this competitor merits much more credence to be accepted as fact than does the Old Earth concept.

What is this competing explanation?

The Bible!

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 (CSB)

The Bible functions as many things, one of which is a historical record. Christians proclaim this book as the Word of God. Historians have been amazed by the book’s stunning accuracy which is constantly being verified repeatedly as being accurate.

In past devotionals we’ve talked about the six days of creation. Genesis record the creation events encapsulated in an evening and morning as a single day of creation. So, the day’s referred to in the first chapter of Genesis are typical days we experience.

The laws of motion would dictate that if there was a difference that the days would in fact be shorter, not longer, due to friction and expenditure of dynamic energy. This difference would have to be minimal because if it were to continue from the dawn of the earth till now, it would result in our orbit around the sun slowing to a point at which the earth would have been captured in the gravitational pull of the sun, frying us to a crisp.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (CSB)

The biblical world view demands that if we are putting our faith in the Word of God, we accept God’s power as infinite and that he created everything in the universe in six 24-hour days.

Intelligent design makes a solid case that, if we are vested in the infallibility of the scripture, then we accept that God is the architect and builder of all we can see, smell, see and touch. If that is the case, then the radiocarbon dating which assumes that all matter has the same amount of radio decay over time. This has been proven as not being the case. Further it assumes that all matter began with the same value which is a theoretical which is impossible to prove or disprove. It also flies in the face of property differences of matter in density and quantity.

What’s better? How do you know how old you are? Some communicated that in a variety of ways. The most definitive of those means is written documentation, your birth certificate. Then the Bibles indication there were about 2,000 years between Adam and Abraham, 2000 years between Abraham to Jesus, and about 2000 years between Jesus and today, would place a reasonable approximation of earth’s age at only 6,000 years.

The earth then would be a virtual infant in terms of radiocarbon dating.

The question for the Christian is, do you believe the Word of the creator of all things and his authority, or do you place your trust in man’s attempt to interpret the historical explanation of the earth and the universe’s formation?

God has provided documented evidence which is constantly being substantiated by archeological, and other practical sciences.  Why would we even consider the Old Earth theories when they provide little to no evidence and are constantly facing walls of proven science that disproves the theory?

Old Earth concepts are as much fact base as believing in fairytales. If we believe the Bible is the Word of God, then we have to believe…

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 (CSB)

Beginning the process of creation that lasted six days, and the ensuing years since that time tabulate to only roughly 6,000 years.

Two things that every Christian should consider before accepting Old Earth Theories:

  • You believe that your God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscience. If you don’t then you don’t believe in the God who is described in the Bible.
  Omnipotent:

“Look, I am the Lord, the God over every creature. Is anything too difficult for me?”

Jeremiah 32:27 (CSB)

  Omnipresent:

The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, observing the wicked and the good.

Proverbs 15:3 (CSB)

  Omniscience:

Our Lord is great, vast in power; his understanding is infinite.

Psalms 147:5 (CSB)

  • God’s word is infallible:

All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (CSB)

If we believe these two points, then there is no way you as a Christian can place any weight in the Old Earth Theories that are touted by the world.

The other thing that should stand out to you is the apparent 2000-year frequency of major events in scripture. 2,000 years between Adam and Abraham, 2000 years between Abraham to Jesus, and the 2000 years which has elapsed since Jesus ushered in the ‘New Covenant’; would seem to suggest that Christ’s return is eminent.

Jesus indicated that no one knows when that day and hour are. Not even the angels. But given the fact that all prophecy has been fulfilled that would allow for the return of our Lord any day, that he surely will be coming for his own soon.

Then our young 6000-year-old earth will see its end and a new heaven and earth will replace the old.

In the Grace of Jesus!
