Meaningless?

Is your offering…

June 6th, 2019

When you have the sense that you’re doing everything by the numbers and have your spiritual underpinning all tacked down in good shape, THEN you should worry.

We are experts at kidding ourselves. Convincing our minds that our hearts are in the right spot. Everything is just wonderful, and we have our routine down so well that the devil can do what he will because we are an overcomer.

Mandisa has a song by that title. Overcomer. I’m not picking on Mandisa, she’s one of my favorite Christian artists, and the song doesn’t spin on overcoming in the sense that this devotional is being critical of.

The song correctly points out, it is through the power of God we are able to overcome the impossible. But there are those out there, exuding the confidence they have everything under control, God doesn’t need to intervein because they have it handled.

They do the right things, talk to the right people, attend the right gatherings, and yes they also believe they have cornered the market on providing a worthy offering to the Lord.

Do not bring any more meaningless offerings; I consider your incense detestable! You observe new moon festivals, Sabbaths, and convocations, but I cannot tolerate sin-stained celebrations! I hate your new moon festivals and assemblies; they are a burden that I am tired of carrying.

Isaiah 1:13-14 (NET)

The last thing that God wants to see in us is the pride of accomplishment. Our engagement in the excess that we have gathered to ourselves run counter to the humbled hearts he seeks to grow in us.

The type of confidence that the Lord wishes to see in us is the kind that is vested in the power and desire of God to provide all that we need according to his riches in heaven. (Philippians 4:19)

Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.

Hebrews 4:16 (NET)

God wants his children to look to him for their sustenance and welfare. Looking out for number one isn’t part of God grand scheme for any of us.

The God who says seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened, wouldn’t have made a point of this because we have all we require within our own resources. His resources are ours and he takes joy in being able to provide.

And God is able to make all grace overflow to you so that because you have enough of everything in every way at all times, you will overflow in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:8 (NET)

He is abundant in grace and love; eager to pour both out upon us. When we work three jobs just to maintain a lifestyle, it doesn’t really matter how much that tithe amounts to. No offering is sufficient to balance out the fact that God has been replaced as number one in your life, we our primary goal in life is to fill our pockets and not our hearts.

God wants to be our father; he wants us to be his children. That relationship means so much to him he asked of his Son to sacrifice himself so as to be able to redeem us.

He called a child, had him stand among them, and said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn around and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven! Whoever then humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 18:2-4 (NET)

Do you see repentance there in this scripture; turn around? It can’t be exaggerated, just how much God sees us as his children and wants us to behave as grateful, expecting, and engaged offspring. Little examples of shoots of God-likeness. Eager to figure out next what we can do, say and, adopt that makes us more like our Father.

Jesus in this passage proclaims that unless we become like little children, we are not going to make it into his kingdom. That’s a pretty sobering concept! There is no, zero, zippo, room for us to be full of ourselves, especially when we are full of the Spirit of the Living God!

As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and that as the last he will stand upon the earth.

Job 19:25 (NET)

If you are a disciple of Jesus, you know the one who redeems you lives. You know that he is going to come back and claim his kingdom. A kingdom that will level every other kingdom on the earth; superior in every way to anything we can come up with to compare it to. He is God the Creator!

Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice – alive, holy, and pleasing to God – which is your reasonable service.

Romans 12:1-2 (NET)

You are the sacrifice God desires; a living sacrifice; “alive, holy, and pleasing to God – which is your reasonable service.” Coming as a child before the Lord. Anything less, is truly “Meaningless”!

In the Grace of Jesus!
