The Constant & The Change Agent
I’m an engineer at the very heart of my makeup. My father was as well. I grew up with a deep desire to understand how things came to be what they are and how they work. The one thing you quickly understand when you look into these things is that there are two things that must always be present in the transformative process. The constant and the Change Agent.
Let’s see how this applies to our lives in relation to the engineer that designed us and what He transforming us into.
Note from Kip…
Scripture is full of references to change and we see God’s Devine hand shaping circumstances, people and things to yield to His will. If we are paying attention, we can also see the foolishness of humanity to attempt to thwart the will of the Creator.
Pay careful attention, then, to how you live — not as unwise people but as wise — making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Ephesians 5:15-17 (CSB)
The Lord’s desire is that we make our will to be in keeping with His own. It is the sequence of things in an ordered model. Just as Jesus prayed regarding His impending march up to Golgotha and He says to His Father, ‘None the less, your will, not mine.‘ We in this model necessarily need to stand before Jesus and conform to His will for us.
I am of the flesh Master, with a desire to be unyielding and self-serving. Preserve and strengthen me in this hour and may it be your will, that becomes my own. Always and forever!
Your Servant, Amen
That which Affect Change
Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.
Isaiah 43:19 (CSB)
For change to take place there are two things that are required; that which is used to facilitate the change and that which directs the change.
The part that is used to facilitate change tends to be in flux and is pliable by nature. This would be considered to the agent of change or ‘Change Agent’.
The part of the process which dictates the order of execution and parameters for the process is the Constant. If this process is going to be consistent and successfully produce the results intended the specifications provided in the Constant must be applied to the Change Agent, or the result will be something short of the expectation of the Constant.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23 (CSB)
In the formulation that God has set into place, we are the Change Agent. If we are anything, we are pliable and capable of change when we become subject to a set of parameters. Our initial state is not inert. We are caustic and corrupt.
God saw how corrupt the earth was, for every creature had corrupted its way on the earth.
Genesis 6:12 (CSB)
Components of Change
We established that we are Change Agents. We need to define the Constant for our formulation to flow correctly.
That would be God, He is the Constant.
Think about the old Hymn ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness’.
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
The fact of the matter is that God is the only constant. There is no other entity or thing that is not subject to change. God is the only thing that doesn’t change ever.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Hebrews 13:8 (CSB)
Paul in the Love Chapter says something that embellishes this fact with even further.
Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will come to an end.
1 Corinthians 13:8-10 (CSB)
Are you saying to yourself, ‘he’s lost it, that scripture says nothing about God not changing!’
Ah, but it does! Don’t forget that God IS love! That inseparable attribute of God is that He is synonymous with love. Paul says “when the perfect comes, the partial will come to an end.”
Refer back to Romans 3:23, we have fallen from the likeness we first had when we were made in the image of God. That corruption has altered us so we are but a partial remnant of the creation he breathed breath into.
So, when the perfect comes, Christ Jesus, the partial will come to an end.
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, since a person who has died is freed from sin.
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him.
Romans 6:6-9 (CSB)
Sounds like a Change Agent to me. It also demonstrates the partial coming to an end in the presence of the perfect. Perfect Love, Perfect Grace, Perfect Justice, Perfect Holiness, Perfect Lamb of God, Our Perfect Master; Jesus, our Constant.
The Change Continues
I have to chuckle when I hear people say I’m waiting to hear God’s will for me.
Now, understand I know what they mean in some cases, Their reference to God’s will is specific to a situation. They have options but wish to be conforming to God’s will in their decision. This is good and healthy for every believer to do. If we did that more frequently we would find ourselves getting out of step with the Lord less often.
The reason why I find it curiously humorous is that we don’t have to second guess what God’s will is for us. Seriously now, we don’t. He’s made it crystal clear the exact things that he wants us to do. There are numerous things that He specifies for us, there is a permanence to these things as well.
Hmmm, let’s see… something that doesn’t change, would suggest that comes from someone who doesn’t change. I believe I got that right!
Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commands.” (John 14:15 CSB)
So to start out with, we are to keep His commands. This sound strikingly like what was stated at the beginning of the article. This is precisely the part of the process which dictates the order of execution and parameters for the process of being a follower of Jesus Christ.
Jesus packaged up the order of execution and parameters in the directive to obey His commands.
The other item that speaks directly to what God’s will in our lives are is that He wants us to conform ourselves as much as possible to be just like Jesus. He wants us to study Him, do what He does, say what He says, and reissue ourselves to be transformed into His likeness.
It’s called being His Disciple.
To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled. They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.
Titus 1:15-16 (CSB)
Unfortunately today, we don’t see a lot of Christians that have made the transition from believing in the sacrifice of Christ for the forgiveness of their sins to the obedience to start the journey to become His Disciple.
Our very make up is designed for us to be able to undergo change. We were formed from the dust of the earth. When you consider dust it has no real substance of its own.
Our bodies are over 50% water. So when you take dust and add moisture, it begins to adhere to itself and able to be formed into various shapes and forms.
I think of the sand sculptures that we see crafted on beaches. Some have such intricate detail, and I realize just how malleable God designed us.
He did not intend for us to accept His Grace, then stand in place.
He calls us to be Disciples! It is His will, for us.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20 (CSB)
Jesus talking to His Disciples tells them (us) to make Disciples as well. To do this across the globe, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe (obey) everything He commands. Then He finishes this out with, ‘by the way, I’ve placed my Spirit in you so you can do this!’
Being a Disciple means patterning our behavior, speech, though, and virtually everything about us to be as much about the Master, Jesus as we possibly can. Jesus further just as clearly as His directive to obey Him tells us to go make disciples everywhere!
It should be noted as well, “teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you“, is a reiteration of “If you love me, you will obey my commands“.
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2 (CSB)
We are the Change Agent. Jesus is our Constant. Don’t allow the life that has been given to us to be shaped in the image of the world. Follow those commands, those parameters given to us by our Constant, that we may be transformed, changed into the image of the one who Created us, The Constant.
Be the Change Agent, be His Disciple.
